Zinc Oxide Desulfurizer Replacement: Which Grade Fits Your Gas Purification System?
If your zinc oxide desulfurizer is reaching breakthrough too quickly, outlet H₂S is increasing, or you are looking for an alternative to your current supplier, the replacement should not be selected by ZnO content alone.
Operating temperature, sulfur capacity, gas composition, pressure and the existing bed all matter.

When Should You Consider Replacing Your Current ZnO Desulfurizer?
A fixed bed does not need replacement simply because it has been operating for a certain number of months.
The more useful indicator is breakthrough.
If the outlet H₂S begins rising toward the maximum allowed by the downstream process, the remaining effective sulfur capacity of the bed needs attention.
Replacement may also be worth reviewing when:
the service cycle is becoming shorter, the current product cannot reach the required outlet H₂S, the operating temperature has changed, or the current material no longer provides acceptable sulfur capacity.
For plants changing suppliers, the objective should be to match or improve the existing duty without creating unnecessary changes to the desulfurization vessel.

HY310-C, T305 or HY306-G?
The first selection point is operating temperature.

These grades are not interchangeable simply because all three are based on zinc oxide.

HY310-C for Low- and Normal-Temperature Gas Purification
Use HY310-C as the starting point when the desulfurization bed operates below 150°C.
HONREL specifies a breakthrough sulfur capacity of ≥10 wt% at 30°C, ZnO and active components of ≥90%, and an outlet H₂S specification below 0.1 ppm under the stated process conditions.
This grade is intended for normal- and low-temperature fine desulfurization where conventional high-temperature ZnO materials may not match the actual operating condition.
T305 for Standard High-Temperature Service
T305 covers 150–400 °C and contains ≥95% ZnO.
Its specified breakthrough sulfur capacity is ≥20 wt%, with a suitable operating temperature of 300–400°C.
For an existing high-temperature ZnO bed with conventional operating requirements, T305 is the standard grade to compare against the material currently loaded.
HY306-G for Higher Sulfur Capacity
HY306-G operates across 150–450 °C.
HONREL specifies ZnO and active components of ≥95%, with breakthrough sulfur capacity of ≥20 wt% at 220°C и ≥30 wt% at 350°C.
For high-temperature units where sulfur loading and replacement interval are important, HY306-G provides the highest specified sulfur capacity of the three HONREL grades.
High ZnO Content Does Not Automatically Mean Longer Bed Life
This is an important point when comparing replacement products.
Two desulfurizers can both contain approximately 95% ZnO and still have different usable sulfur capacities under actual operating conditions.
HONREL T305 contains ≥95% ZnO with specified breakthrough sulfur capacity ≥20 wt%.
HY306-G contains ≥95% ZnO and active components, but its specified breakthrough sulfur capacity reaches ≥30 wt% at 350°C.
So when comparing your current desulfurizer with a replacement, do not stop at: “How much ZnO does it contain?”
Also ask: “What sulfur capacity does it provide at my operating temperature?”
That number has a much more direct relationship with how much sulfur the bed can hold before breakthrough.
Why Is Your Current ZnO Bed Breaking Through Too Early?
The desulfurizer itself is only one possibility.
Higher inlet H₂S increases the sulfur load entering the bed. Higher gas flow increases the amount of sulfur the bed must process over time. Temperature outside the suitable range can also change performance.
Before replacing the material, compare the current operation with the original design condition.
For example, a unit that was designed around relatively low inlet H₂S may experience a much shorter service cycle after feed composition changes, even if the same desulfurizer is still being used.
This does not necessarily mean the material is defective.
It may mean the current grade no longer matches the actual sulfur duty.

Protecting Downstream Catalysts Requires Deep H₂S Removal
ZnO desulfurization is often the final purification step before a sulfur-sensitive downstream catalyst.
HONREL specifies outlet H₂S <0.1 ppm for HY310-C, T305 and HY306-G under their stated process conditions.
This makes product selection particularly important in applications such as hydrogen production, synthetic ammonia, syngas processing, petroleum refining and other processes where residual sulfur can affect downstream catalysts.
The cheapest replacement material is not useful if sulfur breakthrough occurs earlier or the required outlet concentration cannot be maintained.
For these applications, compare outlet requirement + sulfur capacity + operating temperature before comparing price.
