Ammonia Synthesis Catalyst Price: Grades, Specifications & Bulk Orders

There is no useful one-size-fits-all price for an ammonia synthesis catalyst. For a plant buyer, the real question is how much catalyst the converter needs, which grade fits the start-up plan, and what the total charge will cost to put into service.

That is why industrial quotations are normally based on the catalyst grade, particle size, supplied condition, loading quantity and delivery terms rather than a generic price per tonne.

Honrel supplies HA201-2 oxidised 그리고 HA201-2-H pre-reduced ammonia synthesis catalysts in several particle sizes for industrial ammonia plants.

What Determines an Ammonia Synthesis Catalyst Quote?

The main cost drivers are straightforward: catalyst grade, particle size, required charge, order volume, packing and shipping terms.

But buyers should also look beyond the unit price.

An ammonia converter is filled by bed volume, not simply by buying a fixed number of tonnes. Bulk density therefore affects how much material is required for the same available space.

The supplied condition matters as well. An oxidised catalyst requires reduction on site, while a pre-reduced grade can reduce activation work and shorten the route back to normal production.

In practice, two quotations with different grades or bulk densities are not directly comparable just because both show a price per kilogram or tonne.

HA201-2 vs HA201-2-H

Honrel offers two grades for different plant requirements.

HA201-2 is an oxidised iron-cobalt dual-active catalyst. It is intended for plants that can carry out the full catalyst reduction procedure during commissioning or turnaround.

HA201-2-H is supplied pre-reduced. It produces substantially less water during activation and has a shorter start-up cycle. This can matter when the shutdown window is tight and the plant needs to get the synthesis loop back on line sooner.

Their physical specifications also differ.

Why Price per Tonne Can Be Misleading

This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when comparing ammonia catalyst suppliers.

Industrial converters have a fixed catalyst-bed volume. Required catalyst weight is therefore closely related to charged bulk density:

Catalyst charge ≈ available bed volume × charged bulk density

Published industrial research makes the same point. A study comparing commercial wüstite- and magnetite-based ammonia synthesis catalysts reported bulk densities of 3.25 and 2.85 g/cm³ respectively for the same 1.5–3 mm particle range. The researchers noted that industrial reactors are normally filled according to available volume, making catalyst performance per unit volume particularly relevant.

The same purchasing logic applies to the Honrel grades.

HA201-2 has a bulk density of 2.9–3.2 kg/L, while HA201-2-H is 2.2~2.5kg/L.

So when replacing an oxidised charge with a pre-reduced grade, do not simply reorder the old tonnage. Check the converter bed volume and calculate the required charge for the new material.

What to Compare

Quotation ItemWhy It Matters
Catalyst gradeConfirms you are comparing equivalent products
Oxidised or pre-reducedChanges the start-up requirement
입자 크기Must match converter and bed requirements
부피 밀도Affects the required charge weight
Bed volumeHelps calculate the actual quantity required
Total chargeMore useful than unit price alone
PackingAffects handling and logistics
Delivery termChanges landed cost
Lead timeImportant for shutdown and turnaround planning
Technical documentsNeeded for specification approval and purchasing

A cheaper quote per tonne can still result in a higher total cost if the specification, required loading or commissioning requirements are different.

Particle Size Is Part of the Purchase Specification

“Ammonia synthesis catalyst” is not enough information for a purchase order.

Honrel supplies six particle-size ranges:

1.5–3.0, 2.2–3.3, 3.3–4.7, 4.7–6.7, 6.7–9.4 and 9.4–13.0 mm.

Particle size is tied to converter design, bed arrangement and pressure-drop requirements. Smaller particles can improve gas-solid contact but may increase bed resistance, while larger particles generally reduce pressure drop.

For a catalyst replacement, the safest route is to send Honrel the existing catalyst model, particle size, bed volume and loading record. This gives both sides a clear basis for checking the replacement specification.

Oxidised or Pre-Reduced: Look at Start-Up, Too

Purchase price is only one part of a catalyst changeout.

A conventional oxidised charge has to be reduced before normal ammonia production. That means reduction time, water removal and additional work during commissioning.

Pre-reduced material shifts much of this work upstream.

Honrel’s HA201-2-H is pre-reduced before shipment. According to its product specification, reduction water is about 10% of that produced by a conventional oxidised ammonia synthesis catalyst, while the stated start-up period is around one-quarter to one-fifth of the conventional oxidised route.

For a turnaround team, that difference can be commercially relevant. Every extra day between converter loading and stable production affects the shutdown schedule.

This is why procurement and operations should compare total start-up requirements, not only catalyst purchase cost.

Check the Loading Basis Before Ordering

Catalyst loading is another area where purchasing mistakes become expensive.

Industry guidance on ammonia synthesis catalyst replacement notes that bulk density should be checked during loading. Published guidance gives around 2,800 kg/m³ as a common converter design basis for oxidised catalyst, while pre-reduced material can be closer to 2,200 kg/m³.

For a replacement charge, confirm:

Bed volume → selected grade → particle size → bulk density → required loading

This is more reliable than copying the tonnage from the last purchase order.

What Should Be Included in a Bulk Enquiry?

A good RFQ does not need to be long.

Send the existing catalyst model or required HA201 grade, particle size, converter bed volume or required quantity, destination and planned delivery date.

For a replacement project, the existing catalyst specification and loading record are useful. For a new ammonia unit, the converter specification provides a better starting point.

Honrel can then confirm the available grade and supply specification before issuing the commercial quotation.

Price Is Only Useful When the Specifications Match

A low ammonia synthesis catalyst price means little if two offers are based on different supplied conditions, particle sizes or charge quantities.

For purchasing teams, the better comparison is:

Correct specification + total catalyst charge + start-up requirement + delivery

This gives operations and procurement a common basis for evaluating the offer.

Honrel supplies HA201-2 and HA201-2-H for industrial ammonia production, with multiple particle-size options for new projects and catalyst replacement.

자주 묻는 질문

How is ammonia synthesis catalyst price calculated?

Industrial quotations depend on the grade, supplied condition, particle size, quantity, packing and delivery terms. For a converter charge, bulk density and available bed volume should also be considered before comparing offers.

Should I compare ammonia catalyst suppliers by price per tonne?

Not on price alone. Check whether the quotations use the same catalyst type, particle size, supplied condition and loading basis. Total charge cost is more useful than a standalone tonne price.

What is the difference between HA201-2 and HA201-2-H?

HA201-2 is supplied in oxidised form and requires on-site reduction. HA201-2-H is pre-reduced and is intended to reduce activation work, water discharge and start-up time.

What particle sizes does Honrel supply?

Standard ranges are 1.5–3.0, 2.2–3.3, 3.3–4.7, 4.7–6.7, 6.7–9.4 and 9.4–13.0 mm.

Can I order the same tonnage when switching to a pre-reduced catalyst?

Do not assume so. HA201-2 and HA201-2-H have different bulk densities. Check the available catalyst-bed volume and calculate the required charge using the selected grade.

What should I send Honrel for a quotation?

For a faster technical and commercial check, send the required grade or existing catalyst model, particle size, bed volume or quantity, destination and required delivery schedule.
