Cerium nitrate hexahydrate

Cerium nitrate hexahydrate, with the formula Ce(NO3)3.6H2O (CAS number 10294-41-4) is the most common nitrate of cerium(III). White or colorless crystalline, soluble in water and ethanol, delixable, hermetically sealed. It is a component in a burn treatment cream that also includes silver sulphadiazine. Concentrations used are 0.5 M for the cerium nitrate. For very serious burns it reduces the death rate. At 150 ℃ the hexahydrate loses water of crystallization to make a trihydrate, which itself decomposes above 200 ℃. Cerous nitrate hexahydrate has pinacoidal triclinic crystals.

Applications:

Cerium nitrate hexahydrate is the optimum materials for manufacturing Cerium-doped catalyst, and also applied in making auto gauze covering. Cerium is added to the dominant catalyst for the production of styrene from methylbenzene to improve styrene formation. It is used in FCC catalysts containing zeolites to provide both catalytic reactivity in the reactor and thermal stability in the regenerator. In steel manufacturing, it is used to remove free Oxygen and Sulfur by forming stable oxysulfides and by tying up undesirable trace elements, such as lead and antimony.
